Diamond clarity is rated by the appearance of the stone under 10x magnification through a jewelers loupe. The GIA scale begins with a grade of FL (flawless) and is followed by IF (nearly flawless). These are the highest ratings for clarity. Most diamonds for sale today are in the range from SI (slightly included) to I (included).
Cut refers to the process of transforming the gem rough into the beautiful finished product you see in the merchant’s store. Brilliant cut is the most popular, consisting of at least fifty-eight facets, and usually in a round shape. Full cut means a diamond that is a round, brilliant-cut stone. A step cut has faceting like steps on the perimeter of the stone. An emerald cut is a rectangular-shaped step cut. A radiant cut is a step cut in combination with a brilliant cut in a rectangular shape. A princess cut is a step cut in combination with a brilliant cut in a square shape.
Carat weight should be considered last in the four Cs of diamond grading. One carat equals one hundred points. When several stones are used in a setting, the total carat weight of all the stones is given. As a general rule, cluster rings of smaller-weight stones will not cost as much as those containing heavier-weight stones of equal or similar quality.
When shopping for diamond jewelry, get a precise identification of the stone, whether it is natural, synthetic or simulated. Determine the grade of color and clarity and the carat weight of the diamond; and the identity of the metal (properly stamped) used in the setting. Be sure that the merchant gives an appraisal or written guarantee of your diamond jewelry purchase. Know what the retailer’s return policy is and any exceptions that may exist. Always keep the receipt and other information regarding your diamond purchase.
